Blogs related to the BAIMP1 Images Unit

Again, this post is a lil late but just thought I’d make a post about me finishing the Images unit and handing it in :) What I’ve written is probably a load of rubbish and I would have most likely failed but it’s done which just leaves a week of rest and nothing to worry about :) score! Byeeeee!

Ok…we are meant to be the techno generation, and yet it just took me about 5mins to work out how to get onto my blog to make this entry as for some reason my bookmark had changed, but panic over I’m there now!

Having spent the weekend with family that came to visit, I have spent all afternoon finishing my website, which I’m happy to say I have now done (well I did it a while ago now, but I thought as I was still up with nothing to do and waiting for downloads to complete on BoB that I’d write a blog entry! – is it me or has the download speed on there slowed down?!).

On top of all that, all my images are also complete although it did take me a lil while to think of a title for one of them, but got there in the end.

And yes, you’ve guessed it, that leaves the essay – SHIT. That is the only word that I can really think to describe the situation at the moment. I have no idea what to write, how to start, how to end and the bit in the middle – well lets not go there. I have a few ideas, but I don’t know how to write them down and I’m pretty scared! I haven’t written a single essay, essay, like a proper one since my GCSEs!!!

Anyway, what was my little update on how things lie at the moment. All those people that have finished theirs – DAMN YOU! lol.

Oh yeah, just thought of something else I wanted to say…I have just watched Moulin Rouge with a group of people on my floor and I have to say that it was pretty good now having seen it all the way through. It has made me want to somehow link my work to music, and how it can make you feel whilst you listen to it – how this could be done I don’t know but I think it could be a good idea even if thats where it stays.

That is all.

I’m really bad at putting these blog posted up – having said hat having written two today, I’m starting to get the hang of it!

On Tuesday (and Thursday) we looked at Typography, which is a subject that quite interested me (not as much as Alex though it has to be said!) and I liked the idea of the task that we had to do. So…here are my pretty bad attempts.

Sssh!

This was my first go. I quite like it, even if it has been done many times before!

Bounce

This one started off as ‘Spring’ and I was trying to get the letters to look like they were bouncing, so I changed it to bounce. I quite like this and it links to one of my hobbies, trampolining, and in actual fact a personal experience of falling off where I would be represented by the letter ‘e’ !!

And last, but not lease, my worst attempt in my eyes.

Cream

In this one, when I think of cream, I think of a thick substance and swirls kinda like the Cadbury logo, so I tried to make the letters curl round and get smaller, but I dont think the idea works every well because the word was too small for the purpose I had in mind…

And that concludes my little blogging sess for today!

Byeeeee!

Hi,

So the second one day task is over, I know this blog post is a little late, but better late than never!

Paradox…paradox…paradox…hmm…
For this task we had to work in a group of 3, which having done a whole coursework unit for ICT last year based on group work, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to it.

Anyway, my first thoughts for this task was that I wanted to use black and grey/silver to give it that look of elegence in a similar way I had in the past. However, when I started playing around in Photoshop what I was trying to make wasn’t what I got.

Paradox Experiment

In this example I was trying to create a sense of mystery and a kind of stardom by using the clouds to make a smoke effect to suggest to people that it was a high market company. The idea behind this it was that it would have been a logo, that would be similar in size and style to the way ‘Orange” use theirs. After this, I added a lens flare as shown below to see what that looked like. I created a more spacey (is that even a word) feel about the image.

Paradox Experiment 2

Whilst I was experimenting with that idea, another member of the group was looking up the definition of ‘Paradox’;

” a statement that contradicts itself; “`I always lie’ is a paradox because if it is true it must be false” “

source: wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Having thought and this and brainstorming thoughts that we would associate with a company that deals with electrical products, with came up with two ideas and we decided to create both of these for the presentation of ideas.

Paradox Idea 1

This idea, was based on the idea of a electrical cable spelling out the name of the company and having a plug attached at the other end. Which in doing research into the idea we actually found that ‘ASDA’ had done a very similar thing, emphasising the idea that nothing is actually an original idea and that everything has been done before (I think it was Joe and Claudia that told us this).

Paradox Idea 2

Another member of the group then played on the idea of ‘contradiction’ in the definition of paradox. This was done by using the Positive and Negative symbols that represent electricity which are obviously opposites and therefore don’t actually go together.

Out of the two designs, I actually prefer the second. This is becuase I think it is a more visually pleasing image and the symbols reflect the actual meaning of the word. Also, the font type used on this image looks digital which reflects the age that we live and therefore the age that the company would be trading in giving it a modern appearence.

Each of these ideas were used as mock ups, the first on a website, the second a letter head. This again confirmed my choice that the second was more visually pleasing and looked more professional in a sense that it looked real.

I know it’s a little late (almost a week to be exact!) but I have finally got round to putting the result of our first one day task up on here.

The word that I was trying to respond to was “Encounter” and because the theme of this task was Nature and Technology, I initially thought about the interaction or rather then encounter between two animals. With this in mind, I went to the park with a flatmate armed with a bag full of nuts in the attempt to try and get a squirrel to eat out of her hand. I succeded in getting the photo I wanted however, the grass let the photo down.

This is where I started to edit the photo by trying to either airbrush the grass and make it look more appealing or to completely replace it with another image. Both of these attempts failed miserably and I’m not going to put them up on here as they are shockingly bad!! Joe had a look when I was trying to edit it and said that it was obvious that the two images (the squirrel and the grass) weren’t meant to be placed together and that maybe I should take it to the extreme and make it even more obvious…

‘Encounter’

…and so as you can see, I sent the squrriel into space!!

The space image I used for the background was taken from Google Images as was the spaceman himself. I used a couple of techniques we learnt from our Workshop sessions for example, the lens flare and the quick mask tool. I also stole the image that Will gave us of a flame and editted this to make it look like it was coming from the space shuttle.

By including the hand in the image it makes it obvious that its not meant to be there, but at the same time makes you look a little harder and the image I feel and this is when you spot that it is a squrriel in the space suit rather than a human!
The text on the image was meant to appear in a speach bubble but for some reason Photoshop wasn’t playing ball at the time!

I think it is a pretty poor attempt to be honest, but this is where I feel I struggle…I can’t create an image from scratch. My knowledge and previous experience with Photoshop has been to edit a photograph that I had previously taken so effectively I’m only improving/airbrushing what is already there.

Who knows….on the next task maybe my skill may have improved a little and I might get a better idea to develop and experiment with (thats going to be a task in its own right!) OR on the other hand, maybe not! LOL.
