So, the SUBU awards were the other week. This is basically a night were people who have contributed to the student union get some acknowledgement for the work that they have done over the year. This years awards were different to previous years, with all areas of the SU under the same roof rather than having separate award nights for each.

I wasn’t able to go to the awards (in actual fact I didn’t really know anything about them until the afternoon before!) but as it turns out I won an award for working on Nerve Magazine. I was awarded the “Dedicated Designer” trophy. It’s a really nice glass engraved trophy and has pride of place on my window sill at the moment! haha.

I have designed every issue (barring one where I was on holiday for the deadline – Jan 09 issue) whether I get the articles a week in advance as its suppose to be or the day that its meant to be going to print. I’m a reliable designer! And enjoy the work that I do most of the time…having said that there is only so much that you can do for the sport section (zzzzzz)!!

I’m hoping to continue designing into next year, which will be my final year, and hopefully it will help set me up for a career once I finish. There are new changes coming to Nerve Magazine next year…it should be big and better so watch this space!

In one of my many procrastinating moments, I came across this website called Name This.

Its basically a company that “rebrand” or come up with names for new companies/enterprises but are too lazy or not creative enough to come up with their own. Or are they? Could they be more intelligent than that and by using the online “world” actually be producing some of the most creative names in commerce?!

Someone had a seriously good idea with this site – but on the topic of Authorship…who is the author of the new name?! After all the people behind ‘Name This’ couldn’t have chosen the best option had it not been for the wider online community contributing to the site.

The site actually marks your suggestions with a comment i.e. Very Unique, Average and Not Unique. There are loads of completed ones as well as those still active. Each has a countdown of how long left there is to post a suggestion.

Pretty amazing stuff – lets just hope that these people aren’t getting paid LOADS of money for the work of other innocent people.

Anyway, I think thats enough for now.

In one of the Interactive Theory lectures in the last Narratives unit, I made a note of a website that was mentioned “TED: Ideas Worth Spreading”

Now, I’m bored with no one really that interesting to talk to on Facebook, so I just thought I’d browse through and came across this interesting video about computer desktop work spaces and their design and the interactivity of them, called BumpTop…thought it was quite interesting and thought I would share it with everyone on here!!

Unfortunately, I can’t seem to embed the video so here is a link to BumpTop

This blog marks the start of my BA in Interactive Media Production at Bournemouth University. My understanding of the blog, along with the ‘Visual Diary’ is to document our thought process/ideas/emotions as well as our achievements a long the way – so here goes!

When asked by Joe, “What do you want to achieve from doing IM?” my inital reaction is, I haven’t got the foggest! When asked the same thing again by Mik today I managed to come up with “To get into an industry where I will get rich!” (or something to that effect).

But thinking about it, my ultimate goal is for a carrer in Advertising/Marketing, so I guess I want to learn how to use different computer programs in order to make a product(s) for future clients, whether this be a website, animation or even just a static image/advert. And after all, I’m told thats the industry where all the money is!!

To bring you up to speed on the progress of my course, I have offically started my visual diary today. I have been all around my flat collecting images, cuttings, stickers to go into it (whether my flatmates what the paper or not they don’t get a choice!). I will begin sticking these into my mini sketch book tomorrow, although I’m not really sure where it’s going to lead. I find I’m not one of these people that can plan out loads of different ideas and respond to them and bring them all to a conclusive point, but rather find one idea which seems to come from nowhere and stick with it and that would become my final idea. I’m also not very good with the whole experimenting with the idea as I’m going a long, so I suppose you could say that is something else I want to get from this course…to learn or rather to gain the ability to let ideas flow freely and become much more creative than I have been in the past (although once thing I can be sure about is that there will be NO artistic sketches or drawings going on – I mean just look at my Pictionary attempt earlier today!).

I think I’m going to call that the end of my first blog entry, its pretty late considering I haven’t been out or done anything other than playing Floorball for the very first time today which was certainly entertaining…think I was gradually getting the hang of it though so I might try it again!

Until next time – Byeee!
