Ok, so we are back into a new term, the final term of year 1!!
Most people who are likely to read this know what we have to do, but for the benefit of anyone that comes across this (more fool you!) I’m going to write a little bit about the new task in hand.
So, we have come together as media students; Interactive Media Production, TV Production & Scriptwriting to collaborate on a single brief, which has been set by Channel 4. It is to create a ‘Three Minute Wonder’ that is
“something edgy, possibly humorous, contemporary, creative and refreshing. Something that comments on topical issues that are relevant in UK society today…Challenging work, original ideas, alternative voices and approaches, an inspiring take on contemporary social and culture issues are all welcomed.”
They want us to “challenge people to see the world differently”.
This leaves a HUGE amount of scope for ideas, which I will talk about briefly in a moment.
In addition to this; we have to create a segment of information suitable for playback on an iPod, iPhone, or other mobile device. A website to ultimately hold the ‘Wonder’ but also that can add additional perspectives on the issue that we are covering and that can get an audience involved i.e. forums/uploading their own comment in response.
However, each other these things have to relate to one another and can’t just be completely random sections. So there is a lot of planning to go into this to make it flow across the different platforms we have been asked to cover.
Once the projects are complete, there is going to be a screen at which Channel 4 will watch them and choose a “winning” group whom they feel has most fulfilled the brief. And as a reward, they will be treated to a visit around the Channel 4 studio building in London, which obviously offers a great chance to meet people in the industry.
We had our first official meeting today, at which our Project Manager was established, Emily. Having already known Emily a little before coming to university, I feel safe in her hands and think we can expect to be told when we are out of line and that she can take charge of situations and make the final decision as and when necessary. I was tempted to put myself forward for this role, however, I know that I will not be able to make all of our 3 days shooting as I have already committed to shifts at work which are incredibly difficult to change so felt that it would be unfair to do this to the group.
Back to the ideas, obviously I’m not going to state our ideas here for just anyone of the competition to stumble upon and read…but, quite a few suggestions were made at the meeting and discussed both with and without, Paul (the tutor). Quite a few of these I liked, although I’m not 100% convinced with the current choice of theme. We shall see though, things might grow on me and become a little more obvious.
At the moment, I get the impression that because myself and Adam have put the view across that we aren’t that great at what we do, the buck falls with Dave and the group seem to direct their questions and queries towards him. Which to a certain degree he is probably the best person to direct them to at the current moment in time. Although, as an Interactive Media Producer in the project I want to help him to complete the project rather than just taking a back seat and letting him do the main bulk of the work. I want to push myself in the knowledge of the software that I currently have, albeit not a lot, but then source further information and gain more understanding of how things are done. So Dave, if you read this, I’m happy to be you’re number 2, teach me the ways of PHP!
I have created a facebook group for us all to communicate and discuss the work that we are doing so that everyone knows the progress and how things are going.
The group in general seem to be a good bunch, quite a few different personalities that probably wouldn’t have mixed if not put together. But isn’t that what uni is all about ay?!
We have a further meeting on Thursday in Dylans, which might not be the most practical of locations, but it will be a social atmosphere for us all to try and connect further.
Think that is all I’m going to write for now…Byeeee
